First Day Cover - 100th Anniversary of CPR "Last Spike"
(very rare)
In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the CPR's completion of the Transcontinental Railway on Nov. 23rd, 1885, at Craigellachie, B.C. Canada Post had issued a number of special envelopes during 1985 honoring Canadian Steam Locomotives including this envelope honoring the national railways from 1906-1925. They used this envelope with two photographs in the cachet together with a special issue 34 cent stamp with a side profile of a CP class P2a 2-8-2 locomotive as the official envelope to be stamped with two cancellations: The first is a Day of Issue Nov. 7th 1985 postmarked Ottawa Canada with the image of two couplers. Then the envelope was cancelled on site at Craigellachie, B.C. only during the one day of the re-enactment of the Driving of the Last Spike. The ceremony commenced upon arrival of a special train of dignitaries who boarded the train in Revelstoke, B.C. The special was pulled by CPR steam locomotive #1201. Photos show the front and back of the envelope. A very rare combination of envelope, stamp and cancellations and only available on the one day back in November, 1985.
